A painter of abstraction, Jose Guerrero was born in Granada, Spain but spent most of his career in New York City where he was an active easel painter and from 1962 to 1965 was a teacher at the New School of Social Research. From 1940 to 1944, he studied at the Escuela Superior Bellas Artes San Fernando in Madrid, Spain and then spent two years enrolled in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Among his exhibition venues were the Whitney Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Guggenheim Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

The artist's estate website tells of a defining moment in the artist's career:

Painter, sculptor and poet, Rutsch's oeuvre over the past four decades is tremendous. Celebrated and collected especially in Vienna, Paris, Brussels and New York, he studied with renowned teachers like Boeckl and Dorowsky and collaborated with such geniuses as Salvador Dali. Having left Vienna in the fifties, Rutsch moved to Paris and took the city's art scene by storm. There, Picasso was so enthralled with a portrait Rutsch has done of him that, in a state of great excitement, he countersigned it.

A similar self-portrait painting can be seen on the front page of the artist's website www.alexanderrutsch.com.

A Glimpse into History! Armistice Day, WWI.

Being the history buff that I am (thanks to my dad and endless hours playing Trivial Pursuit at all family functions), I was truly amazed by one of our latest estate fine art finds!

Rudolf Konopa WWI Armistice Signed Watercolor LISTED.

The subject and style were instantly intriguing to me, but became even more remarkable once I noticed the date below the artist's signature: "12 . XI .1918".

For those who have a bit of trouble with their Roman Numerals, this means the scene was painted on November 12, 1918 - just one day after an armistice ended the First World War!

Here comes the history lesson!

The Allied powers signed a cease-fire agreement with Germany at Rethondes, France on November 11, 1918, bringing World War I to a close. Between the wars, November 11 was commemorated as Armistice Day in the United States, Great Britain, and France. After World War II, the holiday was recognized as a day of tribute to veterans of both world wars.

The watercolor was most likely painted in the city of Berlin, as several German flags can be seen waved in the crowd along the right side. The painting is signed by Rudolf Konopa, a well listed Austrian born artist (1864-1938).

We've all seen the photos of Allied soldiers returning from the front lines and kissing their lovers in the streets surrounded by mass crowds celebrating the end of the war, such as this Second World War classic shot below:

With this painting, Rudolf Konopa has truly captured an important moment in German history and for me, the painting brings a new perspective to an iconic day.

RIP, Jeanne-Claude

Jeanne-Claude, half of the Christo and Jeanne-Claude artistic duo, passed away yesterday at the age of 74. Christo and Jeanne Claude were of course well-know for wrapping various structures, including the MoMA in New York, in 1968.

This poster for that event is for sale at our eBay store.

I was fortunate enough to see The Gates in Central Park in 2005. What was most beautiful about that installation, I think, was just how excited everyone was to be in the Park walking amongst those orange gates.

I'm Just Mad About Saffron

When I was a wee little high school student I took an advanced art class my senior year. I'm not a particularly gifted painter, and my teacher was just a tad bit crazed. She abhorred the color orange. Any time a shade of yellow creeped towards a more reddish hue she nearly had a seizure. She was mad about saffron. Literally.

And I really never understood why. Still don't. Here at Bloom we have so many beautiful yellow-orange things. Like this Chinese yellow glazed lamp.

And this painting of Tiger Lillies.

Real-life Tiger Lillies are pretty amazing, too.

As is this Ryszard Ramski cameo glass vase with an Iris flower.

Real-life Irises are gorgeous, too. But they're purple, and hence for another day. Sorry.

But back to saffron and flowers and this radiant Italian painting of sunflowers.

I don't take any of you to be yellow-orange haters, but if you did need convincing I hope I nudged you a little closer towards accepting this sunny slice of the spectrum.

Beautiful Boxes

A few weeks ago I read an article in the New York Times about bento boxes. It seems as though bento boxes have gotten a lot of attention recently. It makes sense, too, as bento boxes enforce portion control while making food look...well, adorable. The New York Times article was picked up by the New York Times blog about a month after the orignial story was printed. The blog asked several scholars exactly what the bento box suggests about Japanese culture. While we don't currently have any bento boxes in stock, we do have this absolutely stunning 19th century Japanese picnic basket for sale at our eBay store.The box opens up to reveal four square boxes, one triangular box, and four stacked triangular dishes. Investigating Our Newly Listed Isaac Soyer Painting, or Why the Internet is Amazing

Last week we put this Isaac Soyer painting up for auction on eBay. This large and lovely painting depicts Gramercy Park, and because we are true New Yorkers we decided we must try to figure out exactly what building is shown in Soyer's work. For any of you that don't know, Bloom's headquarters on Coney Island Ave. in Brooklyn is a long ways away from Gramercy Park. I attempted to search for well known buildings in the area via Google, but was having no luck spotting this red brick facade. As a last resort I decided to use Google Map's satellite feature to take a virtual walk around the 'hood to see what I could find. Lo and Behold, I spotted it! The building's address is 4 Gramercy Park West, and you can read a little bit more about the building at the eBay listing here.

Connect the Dots: Royal Copenhagen, Bing & Grondahl, Waverly Fabrics

As promised, I took my trip upstate this weekend and had a fabulous time. I was browsing the fabric selection of a shop that salvages and resells fabric when, much to my surprise, I came across a 4 yard piece of fabric that I have only ever seen in my grandmother's house. It is a Waverly Fabric, but the design is Royal Copenhagen's. And yes, my grandma has the plates. And the wallpaper. And the fabric. In fact, the entire dining room is covered in Royal Copenhagen's 'Blue Fluted,' and it is possibly my favorite room in the house. I even found an ad in the April 14, 1977 edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announcing the arrival of Waverly's new fabric. Needless to say, I am immensely pleased with my fabric find, especially because my grandmother has tried and failed to find more of it. I plan to sew a dress out of my yardage and take it over to grandma's house for a photo shoot.

And, as luck would have it, I walked into work today only to notice the lovely set of tableware pictured above, and for sale here. I was surprised to pick up a cup and see the Bing & Grondahl mark, as this stuff looks exactly like Royal Copenhagen's 'Blue Fluted.' Some quick internet research told me that Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grondahl merged in 1987. It all makes sense now!

Modern Design

Modern design has taken a hit in recent months. It’s a buyer’s market, thanks to slow sales and overflowing inventory. We’re not shy about saying that we’re in the same boat. At Bloom Fine Art & Antiques, we have many fine pieces in Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Midcentury.

For example, our Art Nouveau inventory includes a sterling silver bowl with engraved daffodils, a pewter platter by Ledru, a turn-of the century sculptor, and a pair of pretty Limoges porcelain candlesticks.

It's Chilly in This City!

I went to the Elephant's Trunk Country Flea Market in New Milford, CT last weekend. I bought some nice stuff, but more importantly, the drive up whet my appetite for scenic autumn landscapes like the one pictured above. The leaves seem to be taking a little longer to turn color this season, but I'm taking a trip to upstate New York this weekend anyways in the hopes that my eyes get the chance to feast on trees of all colors.

Antique American Decoys

I was reading The New Yorker's Goings on About Town this weekend, and noticed that Christie's is having a sale of Important American Furniture, Folk Art, and Prints. The New Yorker highlighted Lot 61, "a very rare hand-carved wooden goose decoy from the nineteenth century that once belonged to a “rig” of six such decoys, used for tricking unsuspecting geese during hunting season. For the past twenty years, this particular specimen has been living on a sheep ranch in Patagonia in southern Argentina, having been transported there by an American expatriate with a fondness for remote places."

Things I Wish I Had Room For, Part 4: Candlesticks

I pretty much hate the lighting in my apartment. I've partially solved the problem of harsh overhead lighting by using floor and table lamps instead. But, really, nothing beats candle light. While perhaps not ideal for reading, knitting, or clipping nails, the light candles give off is unbeatable in its ability to flatter anything it shines upon. Which is why if I had my way (and if I was a little less concerned about my home going up in flames), I would have candlesticks everywhere. A few in my bedroom, some in the bathroom, and a candelabrum or two in the living room/kitchen.

Love Is In The Air!

Bloom Fine Art's Featured Listing this week is a truly romantic pair of
18th Century French Rococo Pastoral Engravings by Charles Eisen and Robert Gaillard.

Charles Eisen was renowned for his charming genre paintings, which were immensely popular with an art market eager for pretty frivolous images. Eisen's charm and grace, as well as his considerable talent, brought him to the attention of the King's mistress, Madame du Pompadour. Through her influence Eisen soon became a popular Court painter and a professor at the Acadèmie de Saint-Luc. Eisen was granted the honor of instructing Madame Pompadour in drawing, a privilege, which insured court favours as well as aristocratic patronage.

Like Boucher, Eisen rejuvenated the 'pastoral tradition' in French art. His idealic images are wonderful examples of the decorative paintings and prints that would have adorned the walls of aristocratic homes across France. Typical of this period Eisen depicts a young couple seated in a woodland setting. The man, who is obviously a shepherd with his flock scattered around him, places a rose into his lover's hair while she threads a ribbon around the neck of a restful sheep. This picturesque image is typical of French art during this period, which consistently avoided any reference to the toil of rustic life. Like so many Rococo paintings this image concentrates on an idealized vision of the country. It remains true to the Rococo tradition, and creates a visually charming image that lulls the viewer with its sumptuous detail and decorative subject..

Elyse Lord 2 Original Orientalist Signed Etchings 1920s.

One of England's greatest graphic artists specializing in the delicate art of drypoint etching, Elyse Ashe Lord was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1922 and was also a member of the Society of Graver-Printers in Colour. She favored etching exotic and Far Eastern figure subjects, treating them in delicate and imaginative colors. Lord actively exhibited from 1915 through 1939 in London with the famed Lefevre Gallery, who with London dealer Alexander Reid published her work. Her art was also shown at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal institute, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Walker Art Gallery of Liverpool, the Fine Art Society and The Paris Salon, where she received the silver medal for color prints. In addition, her work was published in Masters of the Colour Print, Volume 1, 1927, with an introduction by Malcolm C. Salaman. In 1990 Cyril Gerber Fine Art of Glasgow held an important retrospective exhibition of her work. Lord lived in Bexley, Kent.

Owls Are Having a Moment

Walking around the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn a few weeks ago, I couldn't help but notice how often this humble creature appeared in craft booths. In fact, the Craft Fair's logo is a drawing of a cute red owl with swirly eyes. I'm curious to know whether the owl had a similarly large presence at subsequent Renegade Craft Fairs.

Another Great Estate Find! Marcel Gromaire Manhattan View Oil on Canvas.

Marcel Gromaire Listed Artist Original Oil New York City ca.1950.

The exact provenance and exhibition history of this painting are unknown. The subject, however, dates it to 1950 or 1951. In 1950, the artist visited the United States for the first time. New York inspired a series of 20 oil paintings and watercolors that were exhibited the following year at the Galerie Louis Carré in Paris. His depictions of the frenetic postwar American city were a thematic departure for Gromaire, who tended to favor industrial and working class themes. Stylistically, though, the works are in keeping with his Cubist-Expressionist technique.

The catalogue raisonné of Gromaire’s work has accounted for 11 of the 20 works that were included in the 1951 exhibition. Of that number, seven are in private collections, two are in museums in France, and one (New York, Times Square la Nuit) sold at auction in 2008 for €16,250. The location of the eleventh is unknown.

This is the opportunity to acquire what could possibly be one of the nine unaccounted for works or prep works from that historic exhibition. Find it for sale online now at our eBay store.

Listed German Artist August Lohr Mexico Original Signed Watercolor 19th C

August Lohr Mexico Original Signed Watercolor 1891 Listed 19th C. German Artist.

August Löhr (GERMAN, 1843-1919 was born in Hallein, near Salzburg, Austria.

In 1887 Lohr accompanied Richard Lorenz to San Francisco to help in the installation of a panorama there. In 1889 the Sentenel reported that he was the manager of a company which was thinking of exhibiting panoramas in Mexico. This was probably the short-lived Milwaukee Panorama Company, for which Lohr was VP in 1890. Although his name appears in the 1890 Milwaukee city directory, he probably left Milwaukee for Mexico in 1890. A painting of the Chapultepec Castle was exhibited at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City in 1891. In 1899 Lohr was back in San Francisco to exhibit landscapes of Mt. Tamalpais, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and Mexico at the Mechanics Institute Fair. A small watercolor sent by Lohr from Mexico in 1912 indicates that he was still living there at that time.

Our 30-gallon totes will be filled with prints (Asian, landscapes, architectural, animals, French Rococo), glass (Murano, milk, cranberry, molded, brilliant cut), porcelain dinnerware and ornaments (all the big names, including Wedgwood, Royal Albert, Limoges), and Asian decorative arts (bowls, vases, plates, and sculpture).

The Chelsea Antiques Garage is located at 112 West 25th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue. We'll be there Saturday and Sunday-July 25 & 26-from 7:00 to 5:00 pm.

Francis Kughler's Moon Landing - 40th Anniversary

In celebration of the upcoming 40th Anniversary of the first Apollo Moon Landing on July, 20 1969, our featured item this week is
Francis V Kughler Moon Landing American Art O/C 20th C.

The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of Project Apollo and the third human voyage to the Moon. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.

Born in New York City in 1901, Francis Kughler was educated in New York City’s public schools and art schools: De Witt Clinton High School, Cooper Union, the Mechanics' Institute and the National Academy of Design School of Art where he met Charlotte Livingston, an artist, whom he was later to marry. During this period he was the winner of a Tiffany scholarship, which provided him a summer of landscape painting at the Louis Comfort Tiffany estate at Oyster Bay, L.I.In the 1940s, Kughler became the President of the Salmagundi Club – a well-known club in Washington Square in New York City that had been the singular gathering place for such great artists as Childe Hassam, William Merrit Chase, Howard Pyle, Carles Dana Gibson, Ogden Pleisner. During WWII, Kughler was selected by the Associated Press to paint memorials of six war correspondents who had been killed while reporting the news. Besides his work as a muralist and lithographer, Kughler was equally well-known for his cityscapes, landscapes, and nudes. He and his wife, Charlotte Livingston, lived and worked in Bronx, New York.

1933 Chicago World's Fair

The 1933 Chicago World's Fair was nicknamed "Rainbow City," as opposed to the "White City" of the World's Fair that took place in Chicago in 1893. "Rainbow City" was not, unfortunately, a reference to some new spirit of racial inclusiveness at the Fair, but referred to the multi-colored buildings that populated the Fair's grounds. The involvement of African-Americans at the 1933 Fair was a hotly contested issue at the time, but it was decided that August 12, 1933 would be "Negro Day" at the Fair. "Negro Day" was a huge failure and the Fair had it's lowest attendance rate on that day. It's impossible to know whether this portrait, which appears to be of an African-American child, was drawn on that day, but it's interesting to think about what this boy's experience at the Fair might have been like.
